TRENDSPOTTING: “BEERTAILS”

Today’s top mixologists are taking a fresh approach to traditional beer-based libations, creating original “beertails” that incorporate some of today’s hottest and trendiest spirits.

It is not surprising that beertails are gaining notoriety.  A recent study conducted by The U.S. National Restaurant Association found that culinary professionals ranked beer as number six on its “What’s Hot” list for 2008.

Beer making and serving has become an art form with the emergence of beer sommeliers and specialty beers created for niche markets.  There are several well-known restaurants that have introduced beertails to their clientele.  For example, the Bier Market on the Esplanade in Toronto currently lists six beer cocktails on their menu.  Cafe d’Alsace, a modern French style eatery in New York, is known for its signature beertail, “Griotte et Citron”, which was created by Aviram Turgeman, New York City’s first beer sommelier.

Hpnotiq, a spirit made with triple distilled vodka, fine cognac and proprietary tropical fruit juices, has come out with the “Hpno-Beertail”, which is made using Corona or Hoegaarden as a mixer.  Below are some points of interest about beertails and recipe for Hpnotiq’s signature “Hpno-Beertail” for your story consideration.

Beertailing 101
  • There are two types of beertails: those made by combining two types of beer (think “Black and Tan”) and those made by combing beer with a spirit such as vodka or gin.

  • “Shandy” is the most well-known beer cocktail that dates back to 17th Century England. Many European countries have created their own versions. Germany calls its version the “Radler” while Spain calls it the “Clara”. In France, Shady has been transformed into the “Panaché”, which is made with beer and lemonade, a lemon-flavored soda.
